The Century Handbook of Writing, by Garland Greever and Easley S. Jones

Published in 1923 by the New York Century Co., this book is a gem. A very well-organized, concise guide to proper grammar, spelling and writing mechanics.  The entire contents are laid out in a grid on the front fly leaf. It appears that some are available through Amazon.com, and maybe other book vendors as well.

The Elements of Style, by William Strunk, Jr. and E. B. White

A classic little book which every writer and grammarian should have. It was originally self-published by the author in 1919 and copyrighted in 1935. It contains a concise summary of rules of usage and principles of composition and guidelines for writing style.  The Appendix is particularly helpful.

How to Write and Illustrate Children’s Books and Get them Published, edited by Felicity Trotman and Treld Pelkey Bicknell

A comprehensive manual on how to get into the children’s book business.  Tips on writing style, illustrating, layout.  Very well organized and presented.  First published in 1988, some of the material may be dated (e.g., how to get a book published), but the basics are all there.

Memory Jogger II, by Michael Brassard and Diane Ritter

A very useful little book of analytical tools, showing you how to use them.  Tools such as Pareto Chart, Affinity Diagram, Scatter Diagram, Flow Charting, etc. I found this particularly useful as a guide to conducting brainstorming sessions.
